Mara Mhòr Offshore Wind Farm developers provide support to engineering students as part of their investment in the future

The bursary aims to play a part in retaining high achieving and talented engineering students in the Highlands and Island and helping to build a future generation of renewable energy specialists to help deliver Scotland’s net zero ambitions.

The support provided will be in the form of a grant per student to the value of £5,000 each for the 2022/23 academic term. This Will be paid in two instalments of £2,500 paid equally over the two academic semesters. The fund is now open for applications and closes on Friday 26th August 2022 at 5pm.

Dr Carolyn Heeps, Project Director for Mara Mhòr Offshore Wind Farm, said:

“We are really pleased to open applications for our University of the Highlands and Islands Future Leaders Fund. This initiative is designed to nurture local engineering talent and support students during their studies. We also hope that the bursary will help us to develop the engineering talent of the future.

“We are determined that our delivery of the Mara Mhòr Offshore Wind Farm supports Scottish industry and the local community, whilst stimulating growth in the local green economy.

“This is such an exciting time to be building careers in renewable energy, as projects like Mara Mhòr move from the drawing board to reality.”

Dr Jen Vanderhoven, Vice-Principal Engagement at UHI said:

“Sitting at the heart of UHI’s mission is our imperative to have a transformational impact on the prospects of our region, its economy, its people, and its communities. We are therefore delighted to have the support of Fred Olsen. Seawind, and Vattenfall through their donation to our innovative Renewable Energy Accelerator Fund. This fundamental donation will allow us to encourage and support students to undertake renewable energy related education and training by widening access and providing opportunities to nurture future talent.

“The emerging sector of offshore wind and green hydrogen, offers unprecedented potential for the communities of the Highlands and Islands in which UHI is rooted. Together with our partners, we are committed to creating the renewable energy generation, helping to realise Scotland’s net-zero ambitions, and enabling our young people and those looking for career changes to learn, live and work in the region.

“We encourage prospective students to apply to this fantastic opportunity and study with us at UHI.”
